55 Bar & Grill

Note: This review was written a couple years ago, so things may have changed.

The guy that runs the steak night is Brian, who used to provide the famed steak nights years ago at the Tavern on Gray. I guess he was more popular than I thought, because I got there around 8 pm to find the entire patio, and most of the inside tables filled up. Let me give you a bit of a warning that if you're allergic to smoke, avoid sitting in the patio. The barrel grill used in making the steaks is stationed on the patio, so it gets a tiny bit smoky.

For 13.99, I got my 12 oz Ribeye, and my loaded baked potato. After letting it sit for a minute, I started cutting in to my medium-rare steak which had been cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, my friend that went with me ended up getting his steak slightly over-cooked. I guess even the best can sometimes slip. The steak was seasoned pretty similar to how it used to be during the Tavern days, but I found it a tiny bit too salty. Fortunately, I was given a small condiment container of A1 without asking, which was actually pretty nice to just change up the flavor on a couple occasions. Now, I know A1 is considered to be the sauce of the steak noobs. But come on, it's not like we're eating $40 dry-aged steaks here. When we go to steak nights at any one of our listed bars, what we're going for is size, price, texture, not too much fat/gristle, and the easy atmosphere of a neighborhood bar.

The potato was pretty spot-on to what I've come to expect in a steak night baked potato. It was served up with a dollop of sour cram, butter, bacon bits, chives, and cheese. I really couldn't have asked for anything more.

All in all, my steak night experience here was very good. I wish they would step it up a bit and use 16oz cuts instead, but the 12oz isn't bad if you're there with a few friends to enjoy a pretty good dinner and drink some beer/cocktails. The location and the general ambiance is top notch, and a place I would feel comfortable going back every Tuesday.
